Driving to Alaska by RV

As large as Alaska really is a few obstacles remain that limit how we can travel in the 49th state. There are very few roads in Alaska and even fewer paved highways to drive on. These facts have become part of the allure Alaska holds for its ever present unspoiled wilderness; the majority of Alaska is still vastly unexplored. Access to the remote Alaskan wilderness is limited to bush planes or to the hardiest of adventurers. While you're here, your RV will be the base camp from which many adventures well begin.

Option 1: The Klondike Highway from the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse Yukon to Skagway, Alaska.

A scenic 98 mile drive passes through historic towns and points of interest not to mention some of the most scenic countryside in Alaska. Follow along the Yukon White Pass Railroad and route of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896. An estimated 100,000 prospectors attempted this grueling journey over mountains, lakes and wild rivers.

Option 2: The Alaska Marine Highway, Alaska Ferry, from Skagway to Haines Alaska.

It's 14 miles by water from Skagway to Haines but allow about 1½ hours for the ferry ride and to allow for loading and unloading of the vehicles. On July 7th we arrived at the terminal in Haines just over an hour early and were near the end of the line for the next ferry to Skagway.

Option 3: The Haines Highway from Haines Alaska to the Alaska Highway at Haines Junction, Yukon.

Covering 155 miles of breathtaking scenery, driving to Alaska via the Haines Hwy is lined with mountains, glaciers, rivers and lakes all the way to Haines. The Haines Highway travels along the Tatshenshini-Alsek Park, through a portion of British Columbia, and along the Kluane National Park and Reserve in the Yukon before ending in Haines Junction at the intersection of the Alaska Highway.

Option 4: The Alaska Highway from Haines Junction, Yukon to Tok, Alaska.

Driving to Alaska on the Alcan highway from Haines Junction you will pass through Kluane Provincial Park and the towns of Destruction Bay, Burwash Landing and Beaver Creek, the site of the Canadian Border. Don't get confused, headed north you need to continue for about an hour to the U.S. border entry point kind of in the middle of nowhere.

Option 5: The Glenn Highway, Tok Cutoff, from Tok to Glennallen Alaska.

This short piece of highway connects the Alaska Highway at the town of Tok with the Richardson Highway 14 miles north of Glennallen. This is a scenic drive that passes through the Mentasta Mountains and skirts the Wrangell Mountains with views of the magnificent Wrangell St-Elias National Park.

Option 6: The Richardson Highway from Glennallen to Valdez, Alaska.

This southern portion of the Richardson Highway is your access pass to exciting destinations like McCarthy, Kennicott Mine, Copper River Princess Lodge, Thompson Pass, Valdez and the waters of Prince William Sound.

Option 7a: While not exactly driving to Alaska, the option to travel the Alaska Marine Highway, better known as the Alaska Ferry, is there and is a pretty popular option between

Why not add a cruise into the mix for an out of the normal Alaskan adventure while you're here. After taking in the sights and sounds of interior Alaska, get ready for a taste of the wilderness of the sea.

Option 7b: Portage Glacier Road from Whittier to the Seward Highway.

While not all that long, just 11½ miles, this stretch of road is good for an entire day of sightseeing. Luckily there is a private campground in Whittier and two more great campgrounds along the road to make spending a little extra time just that much more enjoyable.

Option 7c: The Seward Highway from Portage to Anchorage Alaska.

One of the more scenic coastal roads in Alaska, this stretch of highway winds along Turnagain Arm, past Alyeska Ski Resort, the Historic Crow Creek Mine where daily gold panning is always panning out.

Option 8a: The Alaska Marine Highway, Alaska Ferry, from Valdez to Seward Alaska.

Called the "Mini-Cruise of Alaska", the Alaska Ferry traverses the scenic waters of Prince William Sound traveling past towering mountains, giant glaciers, loads of waterfalls and hidden fjords plus all the marine life including whales and otters too. You will arrive at Seward after turning up Resurrection Bay and sailing through the Kenai Fjords National Park to the head the bay.

Option 8b: The Seward Highway from Seward to Anchorage.

Covering a distance of 127.0 miles, the Seward Highway was the first roads to be designated in the American Scenic Byways it currently holds three coveted designations: USDA Forest Service Scenic Byway, Alaska Scenic Byway, and All-American Road.

Option 10: The Glenn Highway from Anchorage to the George Parks Highway turnoff near Palmer.

Option 11: The George Parks Highway from the Glenn Highway to Denali Park.

Option 12: The George Parks Highway from Denali Park to Fairbanks Alaska.

Option 13: The Richardson Highway from Fairbanks to Delta Junction Alaska.

Option 14a: The Richardson Highway from Delta Junction to Tetlin Alaska.

Option 14b: The Taylor Highway from Tetlin Junction to Chicken Alaska.

Option 14c: The Top of the World Highway from Chicken Alaska to Dawson Yukon.

Option 14d: The Taylor Highway from Dawson, Yukon to Whitehorse, Yukon.

Option 15: The Richardson Highway from Delta Junction to Glennallen, Alaska.
