Stone Mountain Provincial Park

The park is located at mile 365 (595Km) of the Alaska Highway. You first enter Stone Mountain Provincial Park by driving roughly 85 miles (140 Km) northwest of Fort Nelson, B.C.

Stone Mountain Provincial Park is a great place to see the magnificent Stone Mountain Sheep like the one shown here.

It's just about impossible to pass through Stone Mountain Provincial Park without seeing wildlife, especially of the Stone Sheep kind. These two fellows were very accommodating and posed right next to the vehicle for a photo shoot. Some of their buddies were not quite as excited about the whole picture taking thing and kept their distance from us. Little did they know, I have a telephoto lens!

Of all the camping in Stone Mountain Provincial Park there would not be one that we would not consider our favorite place to stay. This is to say every one of the campgrounds is exceptional in its own way and all are very worthy of being a destination in themselves.

Summit Lake campground is a must visit if even just for a mid day picnic or to stretch out the legs for a while. Muncho Lake, located at Mile 462 on the Alasak Highway, actually has two camnpgrounds on its shores with the southern campground being the smaller, but none less desirable, of the two. The northern campground offers a boat launch and a dock with excellent lake trout fishing in the early months of Summer, Late May to early June is my personal favorite with lakers present close to the shores and at the edge of any ice.
